The best-kept secret in Port Ludlow 98365 is the spit at Bridgehaven. This is located on the Hood Canal
about 2.4 miles from Highway 104 on South Point Road and two miles from the Hood Canal Bridge. The spit is
one mile long with 52 lots, where most are developed. On the west side of the split, the homes are located on
a narrow canal, and most properties have boat docks attached. The east side faces the Hood Canal with
beautiful views of the Cascades, the Hood Canal Bridge and looking south, the Banger Submarine Base.
Those that live on the Hood Canal side can also see the large subs as they come and go. There is also a
variety other types of vessels and recreationally boats in view as the travel up and down the Hood Canal. On
the north end of the Bridgehaven Spit is a nice marina where homeowners can moor small boats. The marina
also includes an enclosed clubhouse and barbeque facilities.
It is a neighborhood of second homes or beach cottages. Bryan Swigart, purchase a lot on the spit in
1977 and remembers that there about six to 10 homes at that time. Slowly it has grown to almost full capacity.
When you visit Bridgehaven, you will see a variety of homes. You will note that several of the old homes, as
the neighborhood turns over, have been rebuilt or refurbished. Several newer homes are more than just a
beach house. Giving character to the beach neighborhood is the addition of some small boats and RV’s
parked on properties along the road.
According to Swigart, the original developers of the spit really cared about the ambiance along the one-
mile road of homes. The only street is dead end so there is very little traffic. All of the utilities are
underground so nothing is blocking the view of the Hood Canal. Height restrictions prevent tall homes along
the water to allow homeowners on small west side of the split to have better water views. Originally the road
was gravel, but it did not take too long before it was paved.
One of the charms of Bridgehaven is the beach house atmosphere. Communities like this, particularly in
southern California, are selling for millions of dollars. The price of a home in Bridgehaven is reasonable,
particularly now with the house market being what it is. Ask your real estate agent to show you what is
happening. Currently out of 52 properties on the spit, only two homes are listed for sale. History shows that
these properties do not stay on the market very long.
